If you’re looking for a CUPRA Formentor review that tells you everything you need to know about performance, interior, and what you can expect from the driving experience, look no further.
The CUPRA Formentor is a popular choice of car as it has the safety and security of an SUV with the agility of a sporty hatchback so it feels exciting to drive.
It’s sometimes likened to a VW Golf as it has the same basic chassis, shared gearboxes, infotainment system, and driver-assistance tech, making it feel more familiar.
In April 2024, the CUPRA Formentor underwent a facelift to distinguish it from its sister brand - SEAT, with a sharper front, smaller grille, and new triangular LED lights. The interior also had a refresh with more eco-conscious drivers in mind, as it now features more recycled materials in the cabin, and the electric range for the plug-in hybrid versions has been extended. There’s also a redesigned centre console and a bigger 12.9-inch infotainment screen.
In this blog we’ll be exploring the CUPRA Formentor including:
Choosing the right car is always an important decision and that’s what we’re here to help you with. As a family-run car retailer based in the North East, we help people find a car that meets their needs and lifestyle, whether that’s something new or used, petrol/ diesel or electric.
The CUPRA Formentor is available in a range of engines depending on what suits your driving style and budget.
Starting with the entry level, there’s a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing around 148-150bhp. It comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, while a seven-speed DSG automatic is also available, adding a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which improves efficiency.
If efficiency is the focus, the Formentor is available with a 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid in two power outputs: around 201–204bhp or 268-272bhp. Both use a 19.7kWh battery and offer a vast electric-only range of up to 70-78 miles, making them ideal for everyday commutes. Charging is fast for a plug-in hybrid, with speeds of up to 11kW on a home wall box and up to 50kW using a DC rapid charger.
Moving up a gear in terms of performance, you’ll find the familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, shared with models such as the VW Golf R and Audi S3. These versions are automatic only and available with power outputs ranging from around 261bhp to 328bhp, with four-wheel drive on the higher-powered models.
The limited-run VZ5 is at the top of the chain with a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine borrowed from the Audi RS3, producing 385bhp and 354lb ft of torque. All four wheels have power through a seven-speed DSG gearbox. With only 50 models coming to the UK and production limited worldwide to only 4,000 cars, it’s the most exclusive CUPRA Formentor.
The CUPRA Formentor is available in different trims each offering a different set of features and tech. Below is some information on each of the trim levels.
Stepping inside the CUPRA Formentor, you’ll enjoy a sporty design coupled with everyday practicality. If you’re choosing a higher-spec model, it comes with leather-trimmed seats and plenty of storage space.
You can’t miss the 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system which sits front and centre allowing you to control xx. One small thing to point out is the colourful menus in the system as they can take a little while to get used to. That said, CUPRA has fortunately avoided VW Group’s touch-sensitive steering wheel controls as it has proper physical buttons instead. This is a welcome relief and makes a big difference in day-to-day usability.
When it comes to space, your passengers will have plenty of room to enjoy. Rear-seat legroom is generous, with plenty of headroom too so it’s a comfortable ride for adults in the back. The boot space is also something to highlight, offering 450 litres in the standard petrol model. If you go for all-wheel drive, this reduces this slightly, while the plug-in hybrid version sacrifices more space, dropping to 345 litres to accommodate the battery setup.
The CUPRA Formentor has a firm suspension whilst still being comfortable, and this even applies to the V1, V2 and V3 models which are the most basic in the range. Top-end models come with adjustable suspension, letting you pick from different firmness settings. You can even go beyond the standard ‘comfort’ mode without the harsh bumps you’d normally get from a performance car.
In terms of visibility, the driving position is slightly elevated so you have a good view of the road and your surroundings. Some drivers have noted that over-the-shoulder viewing is limited but every Formentor has rear parking sensors so you can park with confidence, even in tight spaces.
When it comes to acceleration and speed, you’ll enjoy a powerful amount of power even at the entry level, with an acceleration of 0-62 in 8.9 seconds. Moving to the other end of the spectrum, the top speed of the vehicle at this trim level is 126.1 to 136.7 mph. Another highlight of the CUPRA Formentor is its confident handling on twisty country roads, as this is when it really comes into its own. Switching to ‘Sport’ mode also lets you take corners faster with minimal body roll, while the gearbox shifts more eagerly and the steering feels firmer.
The CUPRA Formentor range in the UK has a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) from around £35,295 up to approximately £55,090 depending on the trim.
At the entry level, the V1 trim with the 1.5‑litre petrol engine starts from about £35,295, offering a well‑equipped car with tech and safety features. Stepping up within the V trims such as V2, this adds another level of comfort and convenience such as larger alloy wheels, heated seats and a rear‑view camera with prices climbing into the high £30,000s.
Moving into the sportier VZ trims, VZ1 and VZ2 models are priced in the mid‑£40,000s, with more aggressive styling and optional plug‑in hybrid or higher‑output petrol engines. The most performance‑focused versions, such as the VZ3 with stronger engines and four‑wheel drive, are typically priced close to £50,000.
Limited or special‑edition Formentors reach up to around £55,090, making them the most expensive and exclusive options in the line‑up.
