Estate of the Nation

The latest ŠKODA Octavia Estate is a winner. When the latest model arrived in mid-2021 it was instantly named as Estate Car of the Year by Auto Express magazine.

It retained its title in 2022. Oh and What Car? magazine gave it a 5-star rating when naming it as their 2022 Estate Car of the Year.

You can choose from 1.0 litre, 1.5 litre or seriously powerful 247bhp 2.0 litre petrol power or a pair of 2.0 litre diesels which develop either 148bhp or 197bhp. There’s also a choice of 1.0 or 1.5 litre petrol hybrids and, if you want extra traction, the more powerful diesel engine is also available with all-wheel drive.

Three levels of trim are available…SE, SE-L or vRS.

In a nutshell, if you want excellent performance for your estate, head for the vRS.

If you intend doing a lot of miles or regularly travel with a decent load, then go for the incredibly frugal diesels, or if you want an economical all-rounder which will be happy on the school run, commuting to work, going to the tip and taking the family on holiday outings, then you’ll love the petrol engines. For those of you who are business users, the hybrids will make keep your accountant happy.

Something with all of these models however, stays the same.

Legendary carrying capacity.

If you need a car which really will cope with five adults and all of their holiday baggage or help you move a wardrobe or collect a heap of DIY stuff, then the ŠKODA Octavia Estate will fit the bill. Flip the handles on the rear seats, flop them forwards, and you end up with a truly vast load area.

Standard equipment is good across the range, so much so that everyone would be more than happy with the entry level SE trim. You get air con, LED headlights, cruise control, reversing sensors, smartphone connectivity, powered windows and mirrors, DAB radio and a really smart iPad sized touchscreen on the dashboard. There are loads of clever touches such as a storage area within the front doors for umbrellas. There are lashing hooks in the load area and, flip open the fuel flap and you’ll find an ice scraper. Go for SE L trim and you’ll get sat nav, powered tailgate, privacy glass and heated front seats.

Out on the road, the ŠKODA is great to drive. The steering is light enough to make life easy in town, but it also has sufficient ‘feel’ to give you confidence at higher speeds. The ride is also nicely controlled and the seats are extremely comfortable….it’ll be a wonderful holiday express.

And if you haven’t sat in the latest range of ŠKODA cars, you really need to because you’ll spot that the interior quality now rivals anything in the so-called premium sector.

Terrific all-rounder.
