The first electric Volkswagen GTI

Unveiled as GTI celebrates its 50th anniversary, the new Volkswagen ID.3 GTI is more than an electric model with a familiar badge. Volkswagen has engineered it as the performance flagship of the new ID.3 family, with its motor sending power directly to the rear axle.

Its output of 240 kW (326 PS) makes it the most powerful road-going GTI Volkswagen has put into series production. A substantial 545 Nm of torque is available instantly, while standard Launch Control helps the car accelerate from 0–62 mph in a forecast 5.6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 124 mph.

GTI handling, reimagined for electric driving

Performance is only part of the GTI formula. The ID.3 GTI combines its low centre of gravity with an adaptive DCC sports chassis and direct progressive steering. These systems are designed to give it the everyday comfort expected from an ID.3 while delivering the sharper responses associated with a GTI.

A dedicated GTI driving mode sits alongside Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual. Pressing the illuminated GTI button on the steering wheel sharpens the motor, steering and chassis settings, enables Launch Control and changes the cabin lighting and digital instruments to a red GTI display. Volkswagen has also created a combustion-engine-inspired soundscape for the mode.

How far can the ID.3 GTI travel?

A 79 kWh lithium-ion battery supplies the rear-mounted motor. Volkswagen forecasts a driving range of up to 601 km, or approximately 373 miles, giving the ID.3 GTI the potential to combine hot-hatch performance with long-distance usability.

At a suitable rapid charger, the battery can accept up to 183 kW DC. Volkswagen says a 10–80% charge should take around 29 minutes. These range, consumption and charging figures remain preliminary and may change before the production car goes on sale.

Classic GTI details with a modern look

The ID.3 GTI carries recognisable design cues from five decades of Volkswagen GTI models. A red horizontal line runs across the front above the illuminated light strip, recalling the red grille surround of the original 1976 Golf GTI. Standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, an illuminated Volkswagen badge, a black honeycomb lower grille and red-edged aerodynamic details complete the front end.

New 20-inch Wörthersee alloy wheels reference the famous Austrian GTI gathering, while gloss-black mirror caps and side elements add contrast. Unlike the previous ID.3 GTX, the roof, spoiler and tailgate are finished in the body colour to create a longer, cleaner profile.

Five colours have been announced: Tornado Red, Moonstone Grey, Scale Silver metallic, Grenadilla Black metallic and Glacier White metallic. Tornado Red is especially significant, having become one of the colours most closely associated with generations of GTI models.

Inside the Volkswagen ID.3 GTI

The cabin mixes the redesigned layout of the new ID.3 with model-specific GTI touches. Red detailing appears across the dashboard, premium sports seats and multifunction steering wheel, which features a red 12 o’clock marker. The seats reinterpret the tartan check pattern first seen in the original Golf GTI.

A larger Digital Cockpit and a 12.9-inch central touchscreen sit on the same visual axis. Volkswagen has also introduced a separate button strip for frequently used climate functions and a rotary controller in the centre console for volume and media controls.

Everyday technology and practicality

Available equipment is expected to include a panoramic sunroof, an augmented-reality head-up display, a 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system and premium front seats with massage and memory functions. The ID.3 GTI will also offer a removable bicycle-carrier bracket with a 75 kg nose-weight capacity.

A new vehicle-to-load function will allow compatible external devices to draw energy from the car through an optional adapter. Volkswagen highlights the ability to recharge electric bikes while travelling as one possible use. Latest-generation assistance technology will include available Park Assist Pro and Travel Assist, although final UK equipment is still to be confirmed.

When will the Volkswagen ID.3 GTI go on sale?

Volkswagen says pre-sales are scheduled to start at the beginning of 2027. The car shown at its world premiere is officially described as a near-production vehicle, so UK pricing, the final order date, standard equipment and the first delivery timetable have not yet been announced.
