Volkswagen is preparing to make history once again with the arrival of the all-new ID. Polo GTI, the first fully electric GTI ever produced.
For nearly 50 years, the GTI badge has represented accessible performance, everyday practicality and thrilling driving dynamics. Now, Volkswagen is taking that legendary formula into the electric era.
Set to launch in 2026, the ID. Polo GTI is more than simply an electric replacement for the outgoing Polo GTI. It is a complete reinvention of what a compact performance hatchback can be, combining cutting-edge EV technology with the unmistakable character that has made GTI models icons for generations.
From its instantly recognisable design to its impressive electric performance figures, the ID. Polo GTI looks ready to prove that going electric does not mean sacrificing excitement behind the wheel.
Register Your InterestThe significance of the ID. Polo GTI cannot be overstated. This is the first time the famous GTI badge has appeared on a fully electric production model.
Volkswagen has carefully engineered the car to retain the spirit of the GTI while embracing the benefits of electric power. The result is a compact sports hatch powered by Volkswagen’s newly developed APP290 electric drive system, delivering 226 PS (166 kW) and 290 Nm of torque directly to the front wheels.
Performance is every bit as impressive as you would expect from a modern GTI. Volkswagen claims the ID. Polo GTI can accelerate from 0–62 mph in just 6.8 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 175 km/h (109 mph).
Unlike many performance EVs that focus purely on straight-line speed, Volkswagen has placed a huge emphasis on driver engagement and agility. The ID. Polo GTI remains front-wheel drive, just like the original Golf GTI from 1976, preserving the playful handling characteristics that GTI fans know and love.
Although the ID. Polo GTI introduces Volkswagen’s new electric-era styling language, there is no mistaking it for anything other than a GTI.
At the front, the iconic red GTI stripe stretches almost the entire width of the vehicle, sitting beneath an illuminated VW badge and sleek IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix headlights. The honeycomb lower grille, aggressive front splitter and red accents inspired by motorsport towing eyes all reinforce its performance credentials.
Volkswagen says the design intentionally echoes the proportions of the original Golf GTI, with short overhangs, a long wheelbase and a clean, powerful stance. Sitting on 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, the ID. Polo GTI looks planted and purposeful from every angle.
At the rear, a unique split roof spoiler, illuminated rear light bar and muscular diffuser help create a modern interpretation of classic GTI styling. Even without the GTI badge, enthusiasts would instantly recognise its sporting intent.
The car will also be available in a range of colours synonymous with GTI heritage, including Tornado Red, Candy White, Oyster Silver and Grenadilla Black.
Inside, Volkswagen has blended advanced digital technology with the design details that have defined GTI interiors for decades.
The cabin is dominated by a sporty combination of black and red finishes, with red contrast stitching running across the dashboard, steering wheel, seats and doors. The GTI sports steering wheel includes a traditional red 12 o’clock marker inspired by motorsport, while illuminated GTI logos reinforce the performance feel.
One of the standout features is the return of GTI tartan-inspired seat upholstery. Volkswagen has reimagined the classic pattern for the electric age while combining it with premium ArtVelours Eco Soul microfleece materials for a more upscale feel.
Technology is a major highlight too. Drivers benefit from a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit alongside a large 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, both positioned on the same visual axis to create a clean and modern dashboard layout.
Perhaps the most exciting feature for long-time GTI fans is the optional retro display mode. At the touch of a button, the digital instruments transform into graphics inspired by the original Golf GTI from the late 1970s and 1980s. Even the infotainment system adopts nostalgic touches, including cassette-style music displays.
It is a clever blend of old and new that perfectly captures the ID. Polo GTI’s mission: honouring GTI heritage while embracing the future.
Volkswagen knows that a GTI must do more than simply accelerate quickly. It has to deliver confidence, precision and enjoyment on every road.
That is why the ID. Polo GTI comes equipped with a range of performance-focused chassis technologies as standard.
These include:
The electronically controlled front differential lock is particularly important. It helps distribute power more effectively between the front wheels, improving traction and reducing understeer when cornering aggressively.
Volkswagen has also developed a new GTI-specific driving profile. Activating GTI mode sharpens the steering, stiffens the adaptive suspension and changes the ambient lighting and digital displays to create a more immersive driving experience. Even the sound experience changes, with Volkswagen introducing a specially developed sporty acoustic signature for lower speed driving.
According to Volkswagen, the goal was to ensure the ID. Polo GTI feels like a true GTI first and an EV second.
Despite its performance focus, the ID. Polo GTI remains designed for everyday life.
Thanks to Volkswagen’s MEB+ electric platform, the ID. Polo GTI actually offers more interior space than the outgoing petrol powered Polo GTI. Passengers benefit from additional headroom and cabin width, while luggage capacity has increased significantly.
The boot now offers:
That makes the ID. Polo GTI not only a performance hatchback, but also a genuinely usable family car.
Volkswagen has also added modern EV functionality such as Vehicle-to-Load charging, allowing owners to power external devices directly from the vehicle’s battery. The car can even tow up to 1.2 tonnes, adding another layer of practicality rarely associated with compact performance cars.
Performance EVs need to deliver usability as well as excitement, and the ID. Polo GTI appears well positioned to do exactly that.
Its 52 kWh battery provides a claimed WLTP range of up to 424 km, while DC rapid charging capability of up to 105 kW allows the battery to charge from 10–80% in approximately 24 minutes.
That means drivers should be able to enjoy spirited performance without constantly worrying about charging stops.
The arrival of the ID. Polo GTI represents a major moment not just for Volkswagen, but for performance cars as a whole.
For decades, enthusiasts have questioned whether electric vehicles could truly replicate the character and excitement of traditional hot hatches. Volkswagen’s answer is clear: the GTI spirit is not defined by petrol engines alone, it is defined by driving enjoyment.
The all-new ID. Polo GTI aims to preserve everything that made previous GTI models so successful while embracing the advantages of electric technology. It is fast, agile, practical and packed with personality.
Most importantly, it feels like Volkswagen has approached the transition with genuine respect for the GTI legacy.
With pre-sales expected to begin ahead of its 2026 arrival, the ID. Polo GTI could quickly become one of the most exciting electric performance cars on the market.
For drivers looking to embrace the future without giving up the thrill of a true hot hatch, the ID. Polo GTI may well be the perfect next step.
