VW Tiguan Review: Specs, Performance, Interior & Price

A VW Tiguan review helps you understand how this car measures up to other brands on the market. When choosing your next car, you want to be confident it meets your criteria, in terms of performance, interior, and price.

Known for being a more premium car at the higher-end of the market, the VW Tiguan is a luxurious, spacious family SUV that is practical and easy to drive.

Whilst more expensive than some of its rivals, there are trim options to suit every taste and powertrains to suit every preference. When factoring in these elements, alongside its suite of in-car features and cabin space, it’s easier to justify the higher price point.

In this blog, we’ll be diving into a full VW Tiguan review, exploring the different specs, how it performs on the motorway as well as country roads, the look and feel of the interior, and its price range.

At Pulman, we’re a family‑run dealership with years of experience helping drivers find the right car. Our goal is to help you make an informed choice and get the most out of your next car purchase.

Specifications

The VW Tiguan is available in four different powertrains, including a turbocharged 1.5-litre mild hybrid, 2.0-litre petrol engines, a plug-in hybrid, and a turbocharged diesel, giving buyers more choice of which they prefer.

Officially, the mild hybrid and diesel return up to 45.6mpg and 50.9mpg respectively which is impressive for a family SUV. Moving over to the 2.0-litre petrol options, these are less efficient, achieving 36.8mpg and 33.8mpg, while the eHybrid delivers 175mpg, though this is heavily dependent on how much electric-only driving you need.

The plug-in hybrid offers an all-electric range of up to 75 miles, allowing many everyday journeys to be completed without using the petrol engine at all. In terms of size, the Tiguan measures around 4,539mm long, 1,859mm wide and 1,660mm tall, with a kerb weight ranging from 1,499kg to 1,819kg depending on specification.

There’s also plenty of room inside for up to five passengers, as well as 490-652 litres of boot space with the seats in place. The VW Tiguan can tow between 1,600kg and 2,000kg, making it a practical option for family life.

Trim Options

There’s options in the Tiguan range to suit most drivers, even if it isn’t the cheapest option around. That said, every version provides a comfortable ride, absorbing rough roads and speed bumps with ease before settling into a quiet cruise on the motorway.

Let’s start with the entry level trim - the Tiguan Life.

Tiguan Life

The VW Tiguan Life is well-equipped, blending everyday comfort with usability.

It features an eight-speaker audio system with DAB digital radio and a diversity antenna for reliable FM reception, all controlled through a large 12.9-inch infotainment display.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre petrol engine, while features such as rain-sensing windscreen wipers, automatic headlight control and headlight range adjustment take the hassle out of day-to-day driving, making the experience more enjoyable.

Tiguan Match

The Tiguan Match builds on the appeal of the Life trim. Interior features include 10-colour ambient lighting to lift the cabin, along with illuminated vanity mirrors and safety-optimised front head restraints.

Features such as an auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror and the coming-and-leaving-home lighting function further improve day-to-day usability, while subtle exterior touches like body-coloured door handles keep the look modern and clean.

The Match trim is available in three engines, including 1.5-litre petrol units producing 130bhp or 150bhp, as well as a 204bhp 1.5-litre hybrid for those valuing more efficiency.

Tiguan Style

The Tiguan Style sits between the Match and R-Line versions, delivering a combination of comfort, technology, and styling upgrades. This trim is designed for those who want a well-equipped, versatile SUV without the sportiness of the R-Line or the darker aesthetic of the Black Edition. Power comes from a single option: a 1.5-litre hybrid producing 204bhp, offering efficiency and performance for everyday driving.

Tiguan R-Line

The Tiguan R-Line is the sportiest model in the range, clearly set apart by its 20-inch alloy wheels, distinctive R-Line styling pack, and glossy front grill. Inside you’ll find heated R-Line front seats and branded R-Line floor mats, while the Driver Profile Selection system lets you tailor the car’s handling to your preference. On the road, a lowered sports suspension and Progressive steering system give the R-Line a more dynamic feel than the Life or Match trims. The R-Line also offers the widest choice of engines, with five options including the 1.5-litre petrol 150bhp and 2.0-litre diesel 150bhp, the 1.5-litre hybrid 204bhp, the 1.5-litre hybrid 272bhp, and the 2.0-litre petrol 265bhp, giving buyers plenty of flexibility.

Tiguan Black Edition

The Tiguan Black Edition is the choice for those who want a more striking look. It features 20-inch York Black alloy wheels, a black exterior styling pack, and polished black decorative trims. Inside, the cabin continues the theme with matte chrome door handles and interior styling set in black and anodised finishes.

Convenience is elevated with the Discover Media navigation system (including streaming and internet), a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel with shift paddles, a winter pack, and a panoramic sunroof.

Buyers can choose from four engines, ranging from the 1.5-litre petrol 150bhp and 1.5-litre hybrid 204bhp, to the more powerful 1.5-litre hybrid 272bhp and the 1.5 TSI 272 E-Hybrid Black Edition DSG.

Performance

As noted in the intro, you won’t be short on space in the Tiguan! That said, its spacious interior doesn’t feel intimidating as its high driving position gives a commanding view of the road. It’s light steering makes tight manoeuvres easy too so you should feel more confident when navigating tighter spaces or busy settings.

Moving over to the motorway, the Tiguan is relatively quiet with the car absorbing most bumps and road imperfections well. However there is a little road noise to contend with but generally it’s pleasant inside of the cabin. On winding roads the tyres provide decent grip, but the steering remains quite light which can feel less engaging. For a more dynamic feel, you’ve got the option to switch to Sport mode making the throttle more responsive and the gearbox quicker to shift.

Interior

As a large SUV, the Tiguan has plenty of room for drivers of all sizes. Available across all trims, are optional full-leather seats with heating and ventilation, while the R-Line comes with supportive bucket seats as standard.

Passengers in the back benefit from generous space, and with up to 652 litres of boot capacity, the Tiguan has one of the largest boots in its class. It’s worth noting that this is significantly bigger than the Skoda Karoq’s 521 litres.

For added convenience, the rear seats fold completely flat, making it easy to slide in larger items. The interior has been redesigned to mirror VW’s latest electric models, featuring a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard across the range. Compared to the last Tiguan, this is a key improvement offering software that feels more like a modern smartphone.

Buttons on the steering wheel have also replaced awkward touch-sensitive controls, while the updated voice control system works well.

Price

The price of the VW Tiguan varies depending on the model and trim you choose. Prices typically range from £38,030 for the entry-level spec up to £53,000.

At Pulman, you can view the full Tiguan range including new and used vehicles allowing you to find a car that suits you best. You can also count on the Pulman Price Promise so you won’t find a better price for your new car anywhere else.
