Fancy an electric Volkswagen that’s a bit different from the current choice of hatchbacks or SUVs?

Then feast your eyes on this.

The Volkswagen ID.7.

It’s a ‘fastback’….which means you get a distinctive, sloping, coupé profile while still having a versatile 5-door body.

And at almost 5 meters in length, it’s extremely roomy.

The first cars, which are due to arrive late-summer, will be the ID.7 Pro. Power comes from a 77kWh battery which feeds an electric motor at the rear of the car. Later in the year, a more powerful all-wheel drive, dual-motor 82kWh ID.Pro S will arrive.

As with all electric cars, the first question is invariably how far will it travel before the battery needs to be recharged? Obviously driving characteristics and weather conditions will affect these figures, but Volkswagen predict the ID.7 Pro can cover 382 miles, while the ID.7 Pro S can reach a terrific 435 miles.

These figures make real-world ownership of an electric car totally feasible for most people.

The ID.7 was revealed to the UK media at a special launch and the first thing you notice, when climbing inside, is that this is a premium product. The fascia is hi-tech with a large 15 –inch colour touchscreen and a head-up display which projects instructions and sat nav directions onto the windscreen. The powered seats which are also collected and heated, are seriously comfy, and the entire cabin features soft-touch materials throughout. To say it looks extremely smart is a massive understatement.

The sat nav uses Volkswagen’s latest smart gadgetry which allows your ID.7 to keep in touch with other electric Volkswagens to judge traffic conditions. Clever huh?

Oh, and talking of clever, the adaptive climate settings even feature a drying function. We’ve all been there when the family gets soaked in a downpour.

We’d also recommend the optional panoramic sunroof. The glass has the facility to darken at the touch of a button. This means you don’t lose any headroom to cater for a sliding blind.

The ID.7 is one of ten new electric models that will be launched by Volkswagen within the next 3 years. This year alone has seen the introduction of the new ID.3, the ID. Buzz with long wheelbase and the ID.7. Coming up before we hit the end of 2026 will be an electric compact SUV and the ID.2. This means Volkswagen will have widest range of electric vehicles of any manufacturer.

No word on pricing of the ID.7 yet, but we’d guess somewhere in the region of £50,000.

And as soon as we have one available for test drive here at Pulman Volkswagen, we’ll let you know.
